The Greener Diamond - Our Mission

With the profits from the sale of our high-quality, man-made diamonds and gems set in recycled metals, we are able to:

  1. Reduce the negative impact mining has on the environment and aboriginal communities.
  2. Educate jewelry consumers of the role they play by purchasing conflict natural resources.
  3. Fund projects in Africa to help repair the damage created in the wake of the diamond trade. The Greener Diamond actively assists one community at a time with projects that prominently focus on children, youth and the environment.

Supporting Diamond Mining Communities

The Greener Diamond Agricultural Farm

label

The Greener Diamond Farm is located in the Kono District of Sierra Leone. It is a little over 100 acres and employs and trains over 500 local, reformed child soldiers and street kids. The Kono District was chosen for the location of The Greener Diamond Farm as it is considered to be one of the world's largest fought over areas due to its abundance of natural resources.

"In the Kono, it is not uncommon to find a diamond on the ground during heavy rains or if the ground shifts a little. Because of this, there has always been a fight over the Kono District. However, during the Sierra Leone civil war it got brutal...because the group that conquered the Kono District ran Sierra Leone and the profits from its natural resources. They will always be in conflict and on the brink of civil war. That is why I found it so important to put our farm there. The local youth are tired of mining, poverty and conflict, they now realize mining will never prosper them. This [The Greener Diamond Farm] is what the local people want...they asked The Greener Diamond and we delivered." Anna-Mieke Anderson, Founder of The Greener Diamond

The Greener Diamond Farm is so significant because:

  1. This farm was completely funded by diamond consumers making an educated and informed buying decision.
  2. The farm is using 100 acres of prime diamond mining land to grow food, an idea some people/corporations do not like!

The Greener Diamond has partnered with the well-respected organization, Youth Action International, for this project. Youth Action International are located in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Environmental Achievements

As of August 2010, diamond consumers purchasing eco-friendly diamond alternatives and recycled gold at MiaDonna and The Greener Diamond have:

  1. Prevented over 1.9 million tons of earth from being extracted.
  2. Spared approximately 15,000 tons of toxic waste from being dumped into the natural environment.
  3. Planted over 600 trees, through MiaDonna's new "plant a tree with every shipment" program.

Economic Achievements

We have helped thousands of couples find their perfect ring without breaking the bank.
In today's society many couples are choosing to put off getting engaged since the price of a decent ring is out of the question. MiaDonna supplies them with high quality, designer style jewelry at a fair and affordable price. We have saved consumers an estimated 1.5 to 2 million dollars (as of August 2010), which in some cases, is money heading back in to local communities.

Giving Back Locally

We sponsor many charitable events in our local area. We see the importance of working globally but still supporting our local community where we can. We support:

  4. March of Dimes
  5. CCA - Children's Cancer Association
