From the Founder

My name is Anna-Mieke Anderson and I am the founder and creator of The Greener Diamond and MiaDonna &Co.

I love the beauty of diamonds. I love their sparkle and the dreams they represent. When it was called to my attention what really goes into bringing earth-mined diamonds to market, my research lead me to discover a living nightmare that I never could have imagined.

While the plight of orphaned and abused children had motivated me to donate my time and money in the past, I was completely unaware that by buying a conflict diamond I was unintentionally contributing to terrorizing an entire generation of children in Africa.

What I discovered horrified me and I couldn’t erase the images of suffering from my mind. As a mother of two children, two small beings that own my heart and soul and having lost my own mother to cancer when I was young— I decided I had to do something as these children living under a mantel of fear that most of us could not imagine.

Half of the world’s diamonds (once they are all mixed up) end up in America, and 70% of women in America own at least one diamond. Women just like me- mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters were driving the demand for earth mined diamonds. How could this be? We are the ones that devote our lives to protecting our families and children but we, WOMEN, were the driving force behind this dangerous trade. I felt so guilty and naive; I had to tell women the world over what I knew and let them know they DO have a choice.

"I feel it essential to keep this grass roots – the diamond consumer to the diamond miner."

Public Relations

Since my first discovery of conflict diamonds, I was thrilled by the spotlight mass media cast upon the illicit diamond trade, and encouraged by the policies that were started, but I am now saddened at the lack of attention for victims that continue to suffer and am discouraged by the lack of regulation of conflict diamond policies.

What I want people to know is it’s not OVER. New international policies cannot yet GUARANTEE a conflict-free diamond trade and rebels, governments and terrorist groups continue to fund acts of terror with diamonds. Sadly, since the victims are not stacking up as corpses, the current favored weapon of war used by rebels in Western Africa does not receive the same level of international reprimand. TENS OF THOUSANDS of women, children and infants are being raped and tortured by rebels who are still known to be using conflict diamonds as funding. And still thousands continue to die from the lack of basic necessities, poor living conditions, and continued rebel attacks.

I’m not a policy maker or a corporate tycoon; I’m a mother, daughter and a consumer. I don’t believe all diamonds are evil, nor will a conflict-free diamond be the solution to end all violence, greed, and global warming. I do believe there are alternatives to earth-mined diamonds that are environmentally, ethically and economically superior products. And I do believe as consumers we can make a difference.

I just believe it is time diamonds started living up to their reputation of love and commitment. To stop taking and start giving back to the world they have taken so much from. With the number of diamonds produced in Africa and the price we pay for them, why do they have to live in such poverty?

"I am involved in every aspect of The Greener Diamond. I personally develop the projects with smaller foundations that are located in the areas we are working in. I then visit the projects. I feel it essential to keep it grass roots – diamond consumer to the diamond miner."

If you are in the market to buy a diamond I hope The Greener Diamond motivates you to demand more as a consumer and equips you with the resources and information to make the most informed decision possible.

If you are an owner of an earth-mined diamond I hope The Greener Diamond inspires you to give back in some way, whether you donate to a charity, volunteer, or simply TELL A FRIEND what you’ve learned.

If you are a victim or eye witness to the conflict, I encourage you to continue to share your stories with us. I am humbled and honored by those of you who have been brave enough to reach out and share your experiences.

As a consumer, I no longer want to be a part of the problem – I want to start being a part of the solution. Remember as consumers we hold the power.
